Keratex Hoof Putty 200g

Keratex Hoof Putty is a self-adhesive, malleable filling material used to seal and stabilise clean, dry cavities in the horse’s hoof. Once firmly packed into place, it helps prevent water, grit, mud and stones from entering the cavity.

The semi-permanent wax formulation contains slow-release disinfectant components and can be used after appropriately managed abscesses, small punctures or horn separation have left a cavity in the hoof. It may also be used to support tubing where a cavity requires flushing or drainage under professional direction.

Hoof Putty is firm in the container but softens as it is worked between clean hands. Once inserted, it returns to a hoof-like consistency and forms a flexible, water-resistant plug.

Directions for use:

The cause of the cavity must first be appropriately assessed and managed. Punctures, abscesses, white line disease, seedy toe and unexplained horn separation should be evaluated by a veterinarian or farrier.

Begin with a clean, thoroughly disinfected and completely dry hoof. Wash and dry your hands.

Remove a small piece of putty and work it between your hands until it becomes soft and tacky. Press it firmly into the cavity. Continue adding putty until the cavity is densely filled and the surface is level with the surrounding horn or sole.

The putty may initially be very firm in the container. Keeping it at room temperature or gently warming the closed container in warm—not hot—water can make it easier to remove and mould.

Check the filling weekly and replace it when required. Where Hoof Putty has been applied beneath a shoe, replace it at the next shoeing.

Important shoeing precaution:

Only cold shoeing or adhesive shoeing should be used over or close to an area filled with Keratex Hoof Putty. Do not hot shoe over or near the filled area.
