Western saddle pads are designed for the broader shape and different weight distribution of western saddles. Pad dimensions, thickness, profile and materials vary, making it important to select a design that is compatible with both the saddle and horse rather than choosing by appearance alone.

Measure the saddle and compare it with the dimensions provided on the individual product page. The pad should cover the saddle’s weight-bearing area and extend beyond its edges without being unnecessarily large or interfering with the horse’s movement. Shaped and rounded designs may suit particular saddle skirts and horse conformations.

Position the pad evenly and ensure it remains clear of the spine and withers. Check that it lies smoothly without folds and does not create concentrated pressure beneath the saddle. Remove the pad after riding and inspect the horse for rubbing, tenderness, uneven sweat patterns or disturbed hair.

Clean and care for the pad according to the manufacturer’s instructions. A saddle pad cannot correct an unsuitable or incorrectly fitted western saddle, so consult an experienced western saddle fitter if you have concerns about fit or pressure.
