Choose a winter rug according to the horse’s coat, whether it is clipped, body condition, age, health, activity level and access to shelter. Weather conditions and individual needs can vary significantly, so a heavier rug is not automatically the best option for every horse or every winter day.

Compare the outer fabric, denier, waterproofing, breathability, lining and fill weight shown on each product. Fill weight affects insulation, while denier generally relates to the strength of the outer fabric rather than warmth. Waterproof, water-resistant and showerproof are different specifications, so confirm the stated level of weather protection before ordering.

Correct fit helps keep the rug secure and reduces rubbing or pressure. Follow the manufacturer’s measuring guide and check the shoulders, withers, chest and hindquarters after fitting. Remove rugs regularly to monitor the horse’s temperature, skin and body condition, and change the rug when weather conditions require it.
