Always check that a product is suitable for the particular leather type and finish. Patch-test it on an inconspicuous area, especially on pale, coloured or delicate leather, as some treatments may darken or alter the finish. Products intended for smooth leather may not suit suede, nubuck, patent leather or synthetic materials.

Avoid over-oiling, and do not leave riding surfaces slippery. Leather-care products cannot restore the strength of cracked, stretched or structurally damaged tack. Inspect stitching, billets, straps, buckles and load-bearing areas regularly, and have questionable equipment assessed or repaired by a qualified saddler before use.
