Select a pad designed for the shape and length of your saddle. Dressage pads generally have a straighter, longer cut, while jumping and close-contact styles have a more forward shape. All-purpose pads suit many general-purpose saddles, and western pads are designed for the dimensions and weight distribution of western saddles.

Consider the pad’s size, wither clearance, lining, breathability and care requirements. It should sit evenly beneath the saddle without wrinkles, pulling tightly across the withers or interfering with the spine. Check that the edges extend beyond the saddle without creating unnecessary bulk beneath the rider’s leg.

Half pads may provide additional cushioning or alter the space beneath a saddle, but they should not be used to compensate for an incorrectly fitting saddle. Seek advice from a qualified saddle fitter if you are uncertain about saddle balance or pressure.

Clean and inspect saddle pads regularly, following the manufacturer’s washing instructions to protect the fabric, filling and shape.
