Half Pads for Horses

A half pad sits beneath the saddle and may be used alone or with a full saddle cloth, depending on the product’s design and the individual saddle setup. Materials, thickness, shaping and coverage vary, so check each product description carefully to confirm how the pad is intended to be used.

Choose a half pad that suits the length and shape of the saddle. It should sit evenly, remain clear of the horse’s spine and withers, and extend sufficiently beyond the saddle’s pressure-bearing edges. Ensure that seams, bindings and thicker sections do not create concentrated pressure beneath the saddle.

Adding any pad changes the space between the horse and saddle. A thick or incorrectly shaped half pad can make an otherwise suitable saddle too narrow or alter its balance. Half pads should not be used to disguise or compensate for an incorrectly fitting saddle. Consult a qualified saddle fitter if you are uncertain whether a particular pad is appropriate for your horse and equipment.

Remove the pad after riding, check the horse for rubbing or uneven pressure and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. Merino and other specialised materials may require particular washing and drying methods.
