Choosing the right rug depends on the temperature, wind, rain, available shelter and your horse’s coat, condition and activity level. A lightweight rug may provide useful coverage without the insulation of a heavier winter rug, while a rainsheet can offer protection during wet or unsettled weather.

Waterproof, water-resistant and showerproof do not mean the same thing. Check the individual product description carefully to confirm the outer fabric, waterproof rating or treatment, lining, breathability and intended weather conditions. A rug described as showerproof may not be suitable for prolonged or heavy rain.

Follow the manufacturer’s measuring guide and select the correct size for your horse. The rug should allow comfortable shoulder movement, fasten securely at the chest and remain correctly positioned without rubbing or slipping. Remove rugs regularly to check the horse’s skin, body condition and comfort, particularly as temperatures change throughout the day.
